A Psychodynamic Approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy
All forms of dynamic counselling and psychotherapy aim to identify
and then work with the client's central conflict. This internal
conflict is usually the result of contradictory , confusing or
oppressive patterns of relationship originating in early childhood.
In some cases there may be a specific identifiable trauma such as the
loss of a parent or a serious illness.
These experiences can generate a pervasive emotional atmosphere in
the psyche - for example of anxiety, fear or abandonment.
The child's energy and strategies become diverted into survival rather
than exploration and growth. In this process, conflicts arise
between the child's immediate emotional responses to such experiences
and her / his necessary adaptive responses. These ways of operating
relating back to unresolved issues can become persistent and entrenched
often creating difficulties in adult life.
The psychodynamic therapist therefore aims to help the client to
identify ways in which current problems may stem back to such conflicts.
The work of the therapeutic undertaking is to provide some understanding
and insight in order to address what needs to change. |

Psychosexual Counselling
A key aspect of the dynamics of human relationships centres on the complex
area of human sexuality. We would consider every person's sexuality
as having its own unique characteristics and potential for expressing love.
However sexual feelings and behaviour can also become a source of disturbance
when tangled with more complex emotions such as hate, anger, fear, guilt or shame.
Sexuality is intrinsically linked with intimacy and how we communicate with others.
It is also an expression of inner self perceptions and beliefs influencing how we
locate ourselves within our relationships. Counselling can provide a safe place
where anxieties and concerns can be thought about and explored.
At Albany we can help address sexual problems such as confusion about
gender identity and sexual orientation; unwanted thoughts or feelings; concerns over
sexual health and functioning difficulties in relationships. |

Whilst sharing a psychodynamic theoretical orientation,
individual therapists bring particular perspectives of transpersonal, integrative, cognitive-behavioural
and humanistic models of working. |

Focal issues in which we have specialist experience include
relationship difficulties, times of transition, identity and sexuality, sexual disfunction, family work,
parenting and issues around loss and bereavement. |
